Togo's team badge

The Togo national football team have been shot at by group of gunmen as they made their way to Angola for the African Cup of Nations (The African Championship). The driver of their coach was killed and two players were seriously hurt as they passed through the northern province of Cadinda. Well known Premier League players such as Manchester City’s Emmanuel Adebayor had to carry their injured and terrified team-mates to a local hospital after the attack, which is reported to have lasted for around half an hour. Several Premier League managers are contemplating withdrawing their players from the tournament, and players from other countries have condemned the attack. Togo have called for a boycott of the competition, and will probably not play their match against Ghana on Monday.

Needless to say, I am extremely worried for the World Cup in June and July later this year. If this can happen to a team ranked 13th in Africa, what may these attackers, or people like them be planning for the World Cup in South Africa? I don’t want to think about it.

On the brighter side of sport yesterday, it was announced that Channel 4 has won the broadcasting rights for the London Paralympic games in 2012. They will broadcast a massive 150 hours of coverage of the games.

That is all for the moment. I was planning to write a rant about my sister and I being made to go into school for a grand total of 105 minutes, but after what the Togo team went through, that doesn’t really matter at all.
